May

May has arrived and our focus now turns to being outside and practicing for Track and Field.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can get plenty of time outdoors.

Our grades 4-8 will be practicing, in gym class, for our track meet which will be held in June.  Our grades 4-6 classes will be working on such events as long jump, shot put, high jump and ball throw.  The running events are 80m, 150m and 600m.  Grades 7 & 8 will focus on 100m, 300m,  800m, 1200m,  shot put, discus, long jump and high jump.  So, there are a number of events for the students to practice in.

Our grades K-2 classes will be concentrating on working on their throws.  We are continuing our work with underhand throwing.  Now that the weather is nicer, this would be a great opportunity to go out and spend some time with your child to work on the finer points of throwing.  Remember that whichever hand you throw with, your opposite leg steps forward!

Once again, there is plenty of work to get done in the month of May in the gym.

April

As we hit the final stretch, here is hoping that spring is not too far away and warmer days are ahead.  However, we still have a few items to finish before school comes to a close.

In grades K-2 we have started our catching unit and focusing on catching with our hands and not against our body.  After this, we will start our underhand throwing unit. A big emphasis, for throwing, will be for the correct leg to step forward as this technique is used for many sports.

In grades 4-8 we are also starting a unit on badminton which should take us to the end of the month.  Students will be working on the finer points of the sport, covering such skills as forehand and backhand clears, drives, drop shots, serves and spikes.  Grades 5-8 will be tested on these skills .

The STORM badminton team will also be practicing over this month for league tournament which is scheduled for April 28th.  Practices will be held two to three times a week after school.  For tournament information you can visit the Manitoba Catholic Schools Athletic Association website at  www.mcsaa.ca .

Have a great month everyone!

March

The month of March has quickly caught up on us and you know what the month of March means………DANCE class in gym.

Yes dance classes have arrived in gym and all of our students will be doing something related to dance for the next couple weeks.

Our K-4 classes will be working with me learning new dances as well as going over old favorite dances like “The Bird Dance”, “The Macarena” and “Funky Town”.  For the older students favorites like “The Hamster Dance” and “Daddy Cool” will also be covered.  All of this looks to be a fun time during the next few weeks.

Our grades 5-8 classes will be creating their own dances which will then be presented to their class. It is so interesting watching these students work together in creating their dance. Their final results are usually very well done and you would be surprised to see the moves that these students come up with.

Our STORM basketball teams have entered their final stretch of the season.  Playoff week starts for the competitive boys and girls team the week of March 17th and to keep track on how our teams do you can visit www.mcsaa.ca for all your information.

The final week before spring break will see the STORM badminton team tryouts begin for those grades 7 and 8 students interested in playing.

It looks to be a rather busy and fun time in the gym before our break comes.

February

As we hit the half way mark of the school year, things are really heating up in the gym.

The grade K-2 classes will be starting a unit on ball bouncing (otherwise known as dribbling) and will be doing so for the next few weeks.  The grades 4-8 classes are continuing their unit on basketball with a brief interruption for some fitness testing in there as well.

Storm basketball has hit high gear for this month.  There are a number of games being played out of the Stormdome by our developmental and competitive teams. For up to date information on schedule and game results you can check www.mcsaa.ca for those details. As well, our competitive boys team will be playing at the annual SPORT tournament sponsored by St. Paul’s High School.

So there will be plenty of nonstop action in the gym during our month of February!

January

Happy New Year!  Hope everyone had a great Christmas break and we are all ready to work off all those Christmas holiday calories away.

Our grades K-2 students have now finished their movement skill unit and they will begin working on their manipulative skills.  The first skill they will be working on will be ball rolling.

Grades 4-8 will be starting a new unit on basketball which seems to be a favorite for most students.  This basketball unit will run into the month of February.

Our Storm basketball teams will be resuming practices during the first few weeks of January with league play beginning towards the end of the month.  The competitive boys and girls will start play on January 19th and our developmental boys team will begin January 27th .  For up to date standings and results please visit www.mcsaa.ca.

December

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.”  Where has the time gone?
In gym, there are a number of activities going on before Christmas holidays.

Our K-2 students just finished their unit on galloping and will be starting their next unit on skipping.  Not only will they learn how to do the movement skill of skipping, but they will also work with skipping ropes.

Grades 4-8 will be doing a section on low organized games after completing their volleyball unit.  Games like Predator/Prey, Scooterhandball, Capture the Football and other similar activities will be covered.

I would like to thank all of our coaches, players , staff and scorekeepers for all of their hard work during a very successful  volleyball season. Way to go to all!!

STORM basketball season will be beginning with practices upcoming!

So here’s to a fun month of December and may you all have a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year!

November

November is here and the students of St. Gerard are continuing to buckle down in PE class with another full month ahead for all.

Our grades K-2 students are just finishing up their unit on hopping and will begin a new unit on galloping. For most, this is an easy movement skill to perform.  We will be playing a number of games in gym emphasizing our galloping skills.

The grades 4-8 students are continuing with their volleyball unit.  We have covered bumping and serving along with playing a few games as well.  We will be covering setting and spiking (for the older students) over the next few weeks along with playing more games. Grades 5-8 can expect a written test on the rules of volleyball at the end of the unit.

November is the last month for STORM volleyball.  Our teams have been working very hard on improving their individual and team skills.  The month of November sees our teams playing a lot of volleyball as they prepare for the end of the season.  This also includes tournaments at St. Paul’s and St. Alphonsus. Playoffs begin during the week of November 17th.  For up-to-date results and standings you can visit www.mcsaa.ca.

Looks like another busy month in the gym.
